The Early Rain and the Late Rain

“The Early Rain and the Late Rain…”

B. Keith Chadwell
“Eyes to see”, for Christians, means that we are born again of God’s incorruptible spirit and become new creations in Christ, enabled to be partakers of His Holy Spirit.  Enabled, then, to have the ability to see and understand things of the Spirit.
However, just having spiritual eyes to see does not mean that we can’t look at something spiritual and choose to see it or interpret it through our physical eyes and natural understanding and thereby miss the Spiritual import.
The Old Prophet Jeremiah gives us prophetic perspective in Jeremiah chapter 5; as he chides God’s people who have eyes to see and choose not to see; He tells us that these have a revolting and rebellious heart. Jeremiah goes on to tell us that those with eyes to see who choose not to see give no place, in their hearts, for a moral reverence and fear for their God who gives “rain” to them; both the ”Early Rain” as well as the “Late Rain”.
      Note, here, that in Biblical days the former or early rain; was understood to be; a lesser amount or a
Sprinkling” and the later rain or late rain was understood as; “shower violently”.
     Even people with eyes to see, may not see that this “rain” that is referenced
     by God’s prophets is, in fact, a metaphor or a symbol pointing to; God’s word.

Read these words of the prophets Hosea and then; Isaiah;
Hosea 6:3 then shall we know, if we follow on to know the LORD: his going forth is prepared as the morning; and he shall come unto us as the rain, as the latter and former rain unto the earth.

Isaiah 55:10-11 For as the rain cometh down, and the snow from heaven, and returneth
not thither, but watereth the earth, and maketh it bring forth and bud, that it may give seed to the sower, and bread to the eater: So shall my word be that goeth forth out of my mouth: it shall not return unto me void, but it shall accomplish that which I please, and it shall prosper in the thing whereto I sent it.

How will the Lord come to us? ”AS THE RAIN”!! And…AS THE RAIN effects a natural growth and harvest, so shall God’s word be with spiritual things.
